With Grand Theft Auto VI currently scheduled for November 19, 2026, the wait is getting shorter, but there is still plenty of time. So if you are looking for other similar open worlds to explore or games like GTA VI, this list is for you.

If you are searching for games like GTA, however, simply picking any open-world action game will not do. The best alternatives capture at least some of what makes Grand Theft Auto special: detailed cities, driving, crime stories, side activities, freedom, memorable characters, or the sheer ability to cause absolute chaos. Here are seven worth checking out, ranked from the weakest fit to the strongest.

7. Saints Row (2022)

Released in 2022 and developed by Deep Silver Volition, Saints Row is a complete reboot of the series. You play as The Boss, building a criminal empire in Santo Ileso alongside three friends while taking on three rival factions: Los Panteros, the Idols, and Marshall Defense Technologies. The game combines shooting, driving, criminal ventures, customization and a large open world with a deliberately exaggerated tone.

The problem is that this Saints Row reboot feels like a weaker version of what the series had already done rather than a compelling new take on the formula. It certainly qualifies as one of the GTA alternatives you can play while waiting, but its characters and writing are nowhere near Rockstar’s strongest work, and its open world lacks the density that makes Liberty City or Los Santos memorable. It is worth considering if you want goofy criminal sandbox gameplay, but it lands at the bottom of this list because several other games offer a much stronger experience.

6. The Precinct

Released in 2025 by Fallen Tree Games, The Precinct takes one of the most interesting approaches to the GTA formula: here you play on the other side of the law. Set in Averno City in 1983, the game follows rookie police officer Nick Cordell Jr., who joins the city’s troubled police department while trying to uncover the truth surrounding his father’s death. You patrol the city, respond to crimes, chase suspects, make arrests and get involved in increasingly dangerous confrontations with its criminal gangs.

That makes The Precinct one of the more unusual GTA alternatives. But its top-down perspective and police-focused gameplay also make it fundamentally different from GTA, and you aren’t building your own criminal career or freely behaving like a criminal. Still, the dynamic crime system, vehicle chases and living city make it a fascinating choice for anyone who has ever wondered what GTA would be like if the entire game were built around playing as a cop.

5. Just Cause 3

Just Cause 3, developed by Avalanche Studios and released in 2015, follows Rico Rodriguez as he returns to his Mediterranean homeland of Medici to overthrow the dictator General Di Ravello. The game gives you an enormous open world filled with vehicles, weapons, military bases and destructible environments, while Rico’s grappling hook, parachute and wingsuit allow you to move through the world in ways that few other open-world games can match.

It stands on this list because it captures the freedom of GTA better than it captures its crime and character-driven side. There is an absurd amount of fun to be had simply experimenting with the world, destroying bases and creating ridiculous chains of destruction, but you aren’t getting the same kind of grounded crime drama, relationships or city life that define GTA. Think of it as the “what if GTA stopped caring about realism entirely and gave you a grappling hook?” option.

4. Mafia II

Released in 2010 and developed by 2K Czech, Mafia II follows Vito Scaletta, a war veteran who returns to Empire Bay and becomes involved with the city’s Mafia families while trying to escape his father’s debts and build a better life. Set between 1945 and 1951, the game combines a period crime story with driving, shooting, exploration and a detailed city filled with period architecture, cars, music and atmosphere.

Mafia II is recommended if you love games like GTA because it can scratch the itch for you if you like GTA primarily for its crime stories and characters. It is not nearly as much of a sandbox, and Empire Bay does not offer the same level of activities or gameplay as a Rockstar open world. But Vito’s journey, the relationship between Vito and Joe, and the game’s strong period atmosphere make it a very good choice if the criminal underworld is what attracts you to GTA in the first place. It is less “go anywhere and do anything” and more “live through a Mafia movie.”

3. Watch Dogs 2

Released in 2016 and developed primarily by Ubisoft Montreal, Watch Dogs 2 moves the series to the San Francisco Bay Area and introduces Marcus Holloway, a young hacker who joins DedSec after being wrongly profiled by the city’s ctOS system. Marcus can hack phones, vehicles, cranes, security systems, drones and other connected devices, allowing missions to be approached through stealth, hacking, driving or more direct combat.

This is one of the strongest GTA alternatives because it actually understands the appeal of living in a city that functions as a playground. San Francisco is filled with people, vehicles, buildings and systems that Marcus can manipulate, and the hacking mechanics create situations you simply cannot reproduce in GTA. Its lighter tone and hacker-focused story won’t appeal to everyone, but if what you want is a modern city where you can constantly experiment with the environment, Watch Dogs 2 is an excellent substitute.

2. Sleeping Dogs

Released in 2012 and developed by United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs puts you in the role of Wei Shen, a Hong Kong police officer who goes undercover inside the Sun On Yee Triad. Wei has to maintain his criminal identity while balancing his police work against his growing relationships with the people inside the organization. The game combines driving, shooting, parkour, criminal activities and an unusually deep hand-to-hand combat system inspired heavily by Hong Kong action cinema.

This might be the strongest choice on the list because Sleeping Dogs understands what makes GTA’s formula work while giving it an identity of its own. Hong Kong isn’t just a backdrop for missions. You can explore its streets, drive through its neighborhoods, take part in activities, interact with characters and get involved in the criminal world while constantly dealing with Wei’s undercover situation. United Front Games specifically emphasized the combination of melee combat, gunplay, driving and exploration when discussing the game’s design.

The undercover-cop premise also creates something GTA hasn’t given us: a protagonist who is simultaneously part of the criminal world and trying to bring it down. That creates genuine tension throughout Wei’s story, particularly as his relationships with the Triads become more complicated. Its combat remains one of its biggest advantages, and its combination of open-world crime, cinematic storytelling and martial arts makes it feel like much more than a GTA clone.

Honorable Mention – Grand Theft Auto IV

Released in 2008 and developed by Rockstar North and Rockstar Toronto, Grand Theft Auto IV follows Niko Bellic, an immigrant from Eastern Europe who arrives in Liberty City hoping to escape his past and pursue the American Dream. Instead, Niko gets dragged into debt, organized crime and a world of criminals, con artists and violent opportunists.

It might seem strange to put another GTA game on a list of games like GTA, which is why we put it as an honorable mention. GTA IV deserves a place here precisely because it is so often overlooked. GTA V has dominated the conversation for years, while the older PS2-era games Vice City and San Andreas benefit from nostalgia, GTA IV is ignored by many players. That is a shame because Liberty City is one of Rockstar’s most detailed worlds, and the game is packed with little touches that make it feel like somewhere Niko actually lives. You can watch television, use the internet, go bowling, play pool and darts, visit bars, take taxis, maintain friendships and simply wander around the city.

The story is also a major reason to revisit it. GTA IV is considerably more grounded than GTA V, and Niko’s journey is built around his past, his search for a better life and the consequences of trying to escape violence by becoming involved in more violence. So if it has been over a decade since you played GTA IV, or have never played it, now might be the time!

1. Cyberpunk 2077

Released in 2020 and developed by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 takes you to Night City, a huge futuristic metropolis where corporations, gangs, mercenaries and criminals fight for power. You play as V, a mercenary whose life takes a disastrous turn after a heist leaves them sharing their mind with the engram of Johnny Silverhand. Alongside its main story, the game gives you countless side jobs, vehicles to drive, weapons to collect, cyberware to install and districts to explore, giving Night City plenty to do beyond the main campaign.

While Cyberpunk 2077 is much more of an RPG, it can scratch many of the same itches. You can steal cars like you do in GTA, get involved with criminal gangs, take on mercenary jobs, explore a huge city and approach many situations through combat, stealth, hacking or different character builds. It also has the kind of detailed urban environment that makes simply wandering around worthwhile. If what you want from GTA is a massive modern city packed with crime, characters and things to discover, Night City is one of the best places to go while waiting for GTA VI.

Tarsier Studios has returned to its disturbing world of Reanimal with its first DLC chapter titled The Prisoner, which released on 8th August, 2026. It feels like a natural continuation of the nightmare rather than a completely new experience. Set against a war-ravaged city, the DLC introduces two new protagonists, The Prisoner and The Soldier.

The early reception has been strongly positive. Steam currently lists the DLC as Very Positive, although a recurring complaint from players is its short runtime. Critics have similarly praised the atmosphere, visual storytelling, new mechanics and memorable horror encounters, while frequently wishing there were more of them.

For me, however, is an enjoyable but imperfect expansion that deserves both praise and criticism. Read more to find out!

A World Drowning in Darkness

The atmosphere is arguably the DLC’s greatest strength. REANIMAL: The Prisoner takes us through ruined streets, underground stations, devastated buildings and areas being torn apart by war. The setting which feels like the World War period feels even more hopeless than the base game, creating the impression that civilization itself is collapsing around these characters.

Several reviewers have praised this environmental storytelling. The trenches, ruined buildings and devastated streets act as an effective way of communicating the story without lengthy exposition. But there is a downside to all that darkness. Everything is extremely dark, sometimes to the point where simply travelling becomes frustrating. It may well be intentional, representing a world that is decaying into something even worse, but there were moments when I was struggling to see where I was going rather than feeling scared.

The audio design helps considerably. The soundscape knows when to stay quiet and when to make you feel that something terrible is approaching, particularly during the game’s chase sequences.

Familiar Gameplay with Some Excellent New Ideas

At its core, REANIMAL: The Prisoner sticks closely to the gameplay formula of the main game. You explore, solve environmental puzzles, avoid enemies and occasionally fight your way through dangerous situations.

The Prisoner’s camera is the most interesting addition. It can illuminate dark areas with its flash and temporarily stun enemies. The Soldier also gets a melee weapon later on, giving both characters slightly different abilities.

The problem is that progression can sometimes be frustratingly unclear. The DLC does not always tell you where to go or what you are supposed to do next. There were moments when I genuinely felt frustrated trying to figure out the intended route.

So there is a strange balance here: the game can be satisfying when you figure something out yourself, but wandering around aimlessly because the game failed to communicate its intention is considerably less fun.

The Horror Is At Its Best During the Chases

The flamethrower-wielding Soldier is one of the standout threats. Rather than simply throwing another enemy at you, Tarsier uses him to turn familiar environments into places you desperately want to escape. Multiple reviewers singled out this encounter as one of the DLC’s best moments.

And then comes my personal highlight: the final section with the gun-equipped bike.

It is easily the most fun part of the entire DLC. After all the slow exploration, darkness and tense encounters, suddenly tearing through the environment with a weapon turns the final stretch into a chaotic blast. It is the kind of sequence that makes you sit back and think, “Okay, this is awesome.”

Another Mystery, Not Another Explanation

Storytelling remains deliberately minimal. The Soldier and Prisoner receive little conventional exposition, and their purpose, history and relationship are left largely unexplained.

That is not necessarily a weakness. In fact, it is probably one of the reasons the world works. The ending continues that approach. Rather than giving us a neat conclusion, it leaves behind another mystery.

Final Verdict

REANIMAL: The Prisoner is a solid first chapter for Tarsier’s expanded story. It does not dramatically reinvent the formula. The expansion might have been as fun as the base game, but its unclear progression, excessive darkness and short runtime can be frustrating for some players.

But the atmosphere remains fantastic, the audio design is excellent, the war-torn setting is beautifully miserable. And among the positive aspects of the game, the flamethrower encounter is memorable, and the gun-bike finale is an absolute blast.

Most importantly, the ending gives us a mystery rather than simply closing the book. That makes me want to see what happens next.

Cynthia is a Nilfgaardian sorceress who secretly serves Emperor Emhyr while infiltrating Philippa Eilhart’s inner circle. Calm, intelligent, and highly skilled in magic, she spends much of The Witcher 2 gathering valuable intelligence for the Empire. Considering The Witcher 3 revolves around Nilfgaard’s invasion of the Northern Kingdoms, Cynthia could have naturally returned as part of the Empire’s operations. Instead, one of the intriguing important Witcher 2 characters disappears entirely.

5. Prince Stennis

Prince Stennis is the son of King Demavend III and one of the rightful claimants to Aedirn’s throne. Throughout The Witcher 2, he becomes the center of political intrigue after being accused of murdering his father, and Geralt’s choices determine whether he survives. If spared, Stennis remains one of the few legitimate rulers left in the North. Despite that, he never appears in The Witcher 3, leaving one of the important Witcher 2 characters without any meaningful conclusion.

4. King Henselt

King Henselt is the ambitious ruler of Kaedwen and one of the most powerful monarchs featured in The Witcher 2. His military campaigns and political ambitions play a major role in the conflict between the Northern Kingdoms. Depending on Geralt’s decisions, Henselt can survive the events of the second game. Even so, he is completely absent from The Witcher 3, which is quite surprising considering Witcher 3 focuses on the political consequences of the Nilfgaardian war.

3. Anais La Valette

Anais La Valette is the daughter of Marie Louisa La Valette and a legitimate heir to Temeria’s royal bloodline. She is implied to be Foltest’s biological daughter thought it is never confirmed. Depending on Geralt’s choices, she can be rescued and entrusted to influential allies, giving hope for Temeria’s future after years of conflict. Since The Witcher 3 spends considerable time exploring Temeria’s occupation and resistance movement, many players expected Anais to play a meaningful role. Instead, another of the most politically important Witcher 2 characters is completely absent from the game.

2. Saskia

Known as the Virgin of Aedirn, Saskia inspires humans, elves, and dwarves to unite in the free city of Vergen. She is eventually revealed to be Saesenthessis, a rare golden dragon capable of taking human form, making her one of the most extraordinary characters in the entire Witcher universe. Her leadership and ideals made her central to one of The Witcher 2‘s two main story paths. Despite being among the most important Witcher 2 characters, if you spare her in the game, she never again appears in Witcher 3 in person.

1. Iorveth

No character is more noticeably missing from The Witcher 3 than Iorveth. The charismatic Scoia’tael commander is one of the two central companions in The Witcher 2, with an entire story path dedicated to his struggle for freedom of non-humans.

Fiercely loyal, morally complex, and immensely popular among fans, Iorveth played an important role as well as helped define the second game’s narrative. This is why CD Projekt Red did plan to include him in The Witcher 3, but his questline was ultimately cut during development, making him the most frustrating omission among all important Witcher 2 characters.

When Jin refuses because he is unwilling to become Yuna a scapegoat, Shimura’s affection suddenly has limits.Instead of respecting his nephew’s decision, he places his so-called duty above family, and puts Jin in prison.

This is another reason Lord Shimura is the real villain. His love for Jin exists only as long as Jin remains useful to the system Shimura serves. The moment Jin chooses conscience over obedience, Shimura chooses the state over his own family.

5. His “Honor” Meant Nothing During the Yarikawa Rebellion

Lord Shimura constantly lectures Jin about honor, yet his own history tells a different story. Years before the Mongol invasion, Yarikawa rebelled against the Shogunate. Shimura, alongside other samurai clans, brutally crushed the uprising. Even years later, the people of Yarikawa still despise Clan Shimura and Clan Sakai, showing just how deep the scars of that campaign remain. So where was Shimura’s honor then?

Apparently, honor wasn’t an obstacle when the enemy consisted of fellow Japanese challenging the Shogunate. It only became sacred when Jin used unconventional tactics to save Tsushima from a brutal foreign invasion.

That contradiction exposes Shimura’s greatest hypocrisy. His version of honor was never a universal moral code; it was a tool used to defend the samurai hierarchy whenever its authority was threatened. Once you recognize that, it becomes much easier to see why Lord Shimura is the real villain in Ghost of Tsushima.

6. He Was Willing to Sacrifice His Own Soldiers Instead of Changing His Strategy

We perfectly see at the Battle of Castle how Shimura himself exposes the fatal flaw in his leadership. After the samurai successfully pushed the Mongols back, Khotun Khan’s men destroyed the bridge leading to the inner keep, which had killed countless warriors in the explosion. Rather than adapting to the situation, Shimura planned to rebuild the bridge and launch another frontal assault at dawn, despite knowing it would send even more of his own men into a heavily fortified killing zone.

Jin immediately recognized this reality of the battlefield. Repairing the bridge under enemy fire would cost countless lives before the samurai even reached the castle walls. Instead, he infiltrated the keep alone and poisoned the Mongol army, allowing Castle Shimura to be retaken without sacrificing another wave of soldiers.

Shimura, however, was horrified; not because his men had died, but because Jin had violated the samurai code. That reaction says everything. Faced with a choice between preserving lives or preserving tradition, Shimura chose tradition. It is difficult to call that honorable. A true leader values the lives of his soldiers above customs, outdated or not. Shimura was willing to spend those lives to protect an ideal, making the argument that Lord Shimura is the real villain even stronger.

7. He Was Even Willing to Kill the Man Who Saved Tsushima

Perhaps the greatest indictment of Shimura’s character comes after the Mongols have already been defeated.

Jin rescues Shimura from captivity, reunites the island’s fractured clans, inspires ordinary people to resist the invasion, defeats Ryuzo, kills Khotun Khan, and ultimately saves Tsushima from getting captured by the Mongols. Without Jin abandoning the traditional samurai code, none of those victories would have been possible.

Yet none of that mattered to Shimura. He did not even allow the Ghost to be a temporary solution against the Mongols. When the Shogun declared the Ghost a threat to the authority of the samurai, Shimura accepted the order to execute Jin without hesitation. He disbanded Clan Sakai, abandoned his dream of adopting Jin, and at the end of the game, we see him challenging Jin, the protector of Tsushima, his own nephew to a duel to the death.

This wasn’t a battle against a traitor. It was a battle against the very man who had accomplished what every samurai on the island had failed to do. Shimura knew Jin had saved countless lives, including his own, but he still chose loyalty to the Shogun over loyalty to his family.

That final confrontation reveals Shimura’s true priorities. His devotion was never to justice, compassion, or even the people of Tsushima. It was to the political system he had sworn to uphold. This is why he can choose his loyalty to the Shogunate over his nephew any day!

Intelligent, observant, and emotionally driven, Shen is more than simply a Chinese version of Sherlock Holmes. He ends up becoming a detective only during his quest to uncover the truth behind his brother Brian’s mysterious death and it is this story that gives the entire game a strong emotional backbone.

Equally important is Ah Foo. The relationship between Shen and Ah Foo is one of the game’s highlights. Their interactions provide warmth, humor, and emotional grounding throughout the story. The chemistry between the two characters ensures that players remain invested not only in the mysteries but also in their personal journey.

The overarching mystery surrounding Brian’s death ties the individual cases together beautifully. Instead of feeling episodic, every investigation contributes to a larger narrative, constantly rewarding you with newer revelations and clues, which keeps you tied to the game.

By the end of the game, the game delivers several fascinating truths for humanity as a whole. However, some players may feel that the narrative gradually shifts away from being a tightly focused psychological murder mystery and becomes increasingly interested in socio-political commentary.

Despite its many strengths, Murders on the Yangtze River is not without flaws. The game’s biggest issue is pacing, particularly during the last chapter, which just goes on and on, on and on.

The problem is not necessarily the overall length. Rather, certain sections simply linger for too long. When we talk about the final courtroom scene, it continues way too long. You spend hours within the same location, cycling through dialogues, presenting evidence, revisiting characters and cycling through dialogues again. And again.

Spending three hours or more in the same courtroom sequence can become tedious, even when the writing remains strong and engaging. Yes, the story and mystery is definitely interesting. But the overall length of the game, which is around 15-20 hours could have been easily shortened by around 20 percent.

Additionally, while the final mastermind reveal is presented exceptionally well, observant players may find parts of the mystery somewhat predictable. No, I am not talking about the killer in the last chapter. The revelation about the killer is mind-blowing and completely unpredictable. But if we talk about the final mastermind behind the events, that is something many players can find predictable if you are used to playing detective games and reading mystery novels.

Finally, the game’s increasing emphasis on socio-political themes near the conclusion may divide players. Some will appreciate the broader historical commentary and the important message that the game tries to give on social issues, others might have prefered and ending with a tighter psychological focus that defined earlier chapters.

Its mind-blowing mysteries, memorable protagonists, atmospheric soundtrack, and stunning hand-drawn artwork creates an unforgettable experience. Even if you are someone who has never played a detective game before, this might be the one where you can start!

Minor pacing issues and the extremely long final act prevent it from achieving absolute perfection, but these shortcomings do not diminish the overall experience.
