Claws of Awaji, the DLC for Assassins’ Creed Shadows was finally released on 16^th September, around 6 months after the release of the original game. The DLC had promised to continue the base game, and introduce players to new gear and take them to a mysterious place called the island of Awaji. However, after launch, the reaction from players has not been entirely positive. Opinions are split between players and critics, and here we shall look at both sides to see if it delivers on its promises or not.

What Claws of Awaji Offers: Story, Gameplay and New Features

The Claws of Awaji DLC adds over 10 hours of gameplay to the base game, and it ties up the loose ends left by the base game, mostly around Naoe’s past and her mother. Some critics do appreciate how the story reaches its conclusion, but many also feel that it is quite “forgettable” and do not add anything that surprises us. Plus, Yasuke’s role has been criticized as well, for being less developed and not being as impactful.

One key highlight of the game is the addition of the Bo staff for Naoe, which offers new combat possibilities for her. This staff, which helps mostly in crowd control, has been praised by many players, because it is a refreshing change from the usual sword and stealth mechanics.

One change that can be seen in Claws of Awaji DLC is that it does not continue with the game’s big open world styled gameplay, but it is more condensed. The island offers us handcrafted levels, and offers multiple paths included stealth routes. Many critics are of the opinion that this tighter level design feels more polished in multiple respects.

Where Claws of Awaji Falls Short According to Critics 

One major criticism regarding the game comes from PC players, who complain about frequent crashes. Claws of Awaji on PC apparently suffers from crashes, bugs and occasionally quests that fail to trigger. This had led to a lot of negative reviews on Steam. Many players also feel that the amount of content provided in the game doesn’t justify the cost. It extends over 10 + but many players feel that some of the side content is minimal, while some of the missions feel repetitive. This has led to some players feeling that the Claws of Awaji expansion DLC doesn’t stretch as far as it should probably have.

Is Claws of Awaji DLC worth buying?

The Claws of Awaji DLC is definitely not perfect, which can be seen from the reviews. But it is not a total disappointment either. The DLC presents a more focused and tighter expansion to the game, with enough story and mechanics to keep players interested. The DLC also fixes some design problems, but many players also feel that the bugs sting too much.

If you loved Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and can forgive few flaws and rough edges, it wouldn’t hurt to give Claws of Awaji a try. If you are unsure, you can always wait for a sale!

What Claws of Awaji means for the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise

In spite of its flaws, Claws of Awaji does have potential for a turning point in Assassin’s Creed, as many players are annoyed and feel that the franchise is dead, especially older players who have been long time fans of Assassins’ Creed. However, in this DLC, Ubisoft is shifting towards tighter storytelling over huge open world content, which might indicate the franchise moving in a positive direction.

However, there is still backlash from players for sidelining the Isu elements and the Assassin-Templar conflict, and this shows that Ubisoft might need to focus on what fans want to see, not just historical spectacle.

There have been rumors going on for over a year regarding an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake, in gaming forums, groups and pages on social media. Although nothing has been confirmed yet via Ubisoft officially, several reports now suggest that work on the Black Flag remake is indeed underway with Ubisoft Singapore taking the lead in this project. Undoubtedly one of the most beloved entries in the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise, according to leaks and rumors, the game might release around March 2026. Excitement can be seen among fans although some are also worried regarding how the new remake might turn out to be.

What we know so far about the Leaks and Rumors?

According to multiple sources, the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake is not just going to be about better visuals and gameplay mechanics. Sources say it is going to adopt a more RPG-like framework like Assassin’s Creed Origins, despite not being a full RPG game by itself. There might be an expanded inventory system, improved combat animations and additional content which wasn’t included in the original release. One leak even claims that Mary Reed, a central character in the game, might also play a more important role in the remake.

However, one rumor regarding the Black Flag remake which might upset majority of fans of the franchise is the potential removal or reduction of the modern-day Abstergo storyline. Many players consider it an essential part of the Assassin’s Creed identity, while players, especially those newer to the franchise, feel that it is an unnecessary distraction.

The Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake is likely going to use the Anvil engine, Ubisoft’s in-house technology, which powered Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Fans can also expect improved ship AI, dynamic weather, along with larger scale battles. It is likely that RPG mechanics, including skill trees and gear upgrades will also play a role in Edward’s progression.

Since Ubisoft Singapore has had extensive experience with naval systems in both Black Flag and Ubisoft’s recent Skull and Bones, fans expect a lot from this speculated remake. It has the potential to deliver a pirate adventure with the latest graphics that fans have always wanted.

Fans’ Expectations and Concerns

Although it is still a rumor, fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise are divided regarding this Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake. While some fans are eager to revisit Edward Kenway’s pirate story with modern graphics, other fans are concerned about the RPG mechanics diluting the main storyline. The possibility of the removal of the modern-day story is another concern.

Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla had received a lot of criticism for their grinding mechanics, and therefore fans of the franchise hope that this remake avoids making these mistakes. Expectations are high, which puts a lot of pressure on Ubisoft to deliver something that can please older fans of the franchise, as well attract newer and younger players to Assassin’s Creed.

The community has also been discussing how the Caribbean setting would look with the graphical power available in 2025. The idea of dynamic storms rolling over the ocean, dense jungle islands brought to life with modern detail, make players hopeful. Therefore, it is up to Ubisoft to make sure they strike the right balance between nostalgia and innovation, because the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake not only has a big potential of recapturing the spirit of the golden age of piracy, but it can also attract a newer generation of fans to the long-running franchise.

Which Assassin’s Creed Remake Could Come Next?

Since Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake is already dominating headlines and discussions in groups and communities, many fans also wonder which title Ubisoft is going to revisit after this. The most likely candidate is the very first game of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed (2007), which introduced us to Altair and the creed. However, for now, Black Flag appears to be the priority, due to its immense popularity and success.

Ubisoft has officially announced that Assassin’s Creed Mirage will receive a surprise new story-based DLC in late 2025. The expansion will take players to AlUla, a 9th-century oasis city in present-day Saudi Arabia, offering fresh chapters and missions in a setting rich with history and culture. Alongside the new content, the DLC will introduce gameplay improvements for both the base game and the new missions—potentially including changes to stealth and combat mechanics.

For many, this could be a welcome update. Mirage has already been praised as one of the best stealth-focused titles in the franchise, but its combat received criticism for being less refined. Any improvements to these systems could significantly enhance the overall experience, especially if Ubisoft leans into making encounters more dynamic and fluid.

The addition of entirely new content is also not surprising. Earlier this year, reports surfaced about a deal between Ubisoft and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) that involved additional support for Mirage. While Ubisoft avoided direct comment at the time, this DLC announcement lines up with those discussions.

As for the setting itself, AlUla makes for a compelling backdrop. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it boasts more than 7,000 years of history, with ancient architecture, carved rock formations, and sprawling desert landscapes. Such an environment seems tailor-made for Assassin’s Creed, offering opportunities for narrative depth while also giving players a terrain perfect for the parkour and exploration the series thrives on. Climbing towering cliffs, weaving through ancient ruins, and sneaking through bustling markets could all add to what players have loved about this franchise all these years.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage originally released in 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and most recently iOS. The game was praised for its return to the series’ stealth-driven roots and its focus on dense, city-based gameplay. With a new DLC on the horizon, Ubisoft seems intent on keeping that momentum alive while offering fans a richer and potentially more balanced experience.
