Is Little Nightmares 3 worth it or just a cheap entry to the franchise? Our in-depth Little Nightmares 3 review breaks down the truth for fans of indie horror games.

Is Little Nightmares 3 worth it or just a cheap entry to the franchise? Our in-depth Little Nightmares 3 review breaks down the truth for fans of indie horror games.

Published by Bandai Namco and developed by Supermassive Games, Little Nightmares 3 released on 10th October 2025 as the next entry in a franchise known for turning childhood fears into creepy and twisted art. Fans were excited, critics were skeptical, and after the game’s release, the conversation quickly became divided. Some called it repetitive, others called it atmospheric perfection. This Little Nightmares 3 review ignores what the “expert critics” are saying and focuses on how it actually feels to experience the game as someone who loves dark cinematic indie horror games.

Atmosphere and Visual Style

The greatest strength of Little Nightmares 3 is its consistency in tone. You only know that Little Nightmares 3 was developed by a different team because it was announced to you, otherwise the gameplay, the visuals and the atmosphere feels completely similar to the previous two games. The game preserves that creepy yet strangely adorable horror style the series is known for. The world feels handcrafted, every frame looks like concept art brought to life, and the cinematic direction makes even slow moments visually engaging. For players who come to the series for atmosphere, this entry delivers exactly what it should. It is still one of the most aesthetically polished indie horror games available today, and that alone places it among the visually memorable contenders for the best horror games of 2025.

Puzzle Design and Gameplay Flow

Critics have claimed that the puzzles feel too simple this time around, but that take comes from comparing it directly to Little Nightmares 2. In reality, Little Nightmares 3 feels closer to the original game in terms of puzzle difficulty. I feel Little Nightmares should not be seen as a heavy puzzle series like Limbo or Inside. It is about pressure and survival, in a creepy yet emotional atmosphere, not about complex problem solving. The puzzle flow here matches that intention. I did not find them mindless, just consistent with the tone of the franchise. Calling them weak feels like ignoring the identity of the series.

Co-op and Boss Encounters

Co-op is the big new feature, and yes, it slightly changes how you move through the world. However, I played solo and therefore can only comment on how it feels when you play in single-player mode. It does not increase nor break the horror, it just shifts it slightly into a shared experience. Although there are no apparent bugs in the game, the only frustrating issue is that sometimes you suffer just because your AI companion doesn’t react on time. The highlight moments are the boss segments. Each stage has that classic Little Nightmares formula of stress, chase, and finally, that satisfying relief upon conquering the boss-level threat. I personally felt a spike of frustration during a few chase segments, but defeating each boss gave a strong payoff that made the struggle worth it.

Game Length vs Price Debate

Here is where most criticism starts forming. Little Nightmares 3 has four chapters instead of five like the previous games. That alone triggered complaints that the game is shorter. However, if you just compare the average YouTube walkthrough durations, it will reveal a different truth. Little Nightmares 1, 2, and 3 all average around 3-4 hours of gameplay. The chapter count dropped, not the actual playtime. But yes, the real issue is price perception. For the cost of this game, players can pick up multiple older indie horror games or even 3-4 AAA titles during a sale. That distorts expectations and makes some feel the game should have been longer, even though it remains consistent with franchise length. As a fan, I do not expect a ten hour campaign from a game in this genre, but I understand why waiting for a sale is a smart choice for some.

Where Critics Got It Wrong

Much of the criticism around Little Nightmares 3 comes from reviewing it as if it needed to reinvent itself completely to be considered good. That is unfair to the identity of the franchise. If a game offers the same quality atmosphere, familiar tension, and satisfying escalation, it should not be punished just because it did not radically reinvent the formula. Critics act like delivering more of what fans actually love is somehow a flaw. The truth is simple. The game does not aim to shock the world with innovation. It aims to continue a visual horror fairytale style that is unique to this franchise, and it succeeds. Anyways, we already have Re-Animal coming in early 2026, which has been developed by the creators of Little Nightmares 1 and Little Nightmares 2. So, those who want a complete new experience definitely have sometito look forward to!

Verdict

If you loved the previous games and simply want more of that cinematic, dark fairytale horror tone, Little Nightmares 3 is worth experiencing. It looks stunning, sounds unsettling in the best way, and maintains the core emotional rhythm of the series. It may not redefine indie horror games, but it does stand as a strong addition to the lineup of the best horror games of 2025 for anyone who values atmosphere over constant reinvention. If you are chasing something completely new, then it might not blow your mind. In that case, wait for a sale and play it with grounded expectations. For those who totally love this franchise, this nightmare is worth entering right away!

Explore seven cinematic horror games that deliver intense storytelling, terrifying choices, and unforgettable movie-like experiences.

Explore seven cinematic horror games that deliver intense storytelling, terrifying choices, and unforgettable movie-like experiences.

Horror comes in many flavors, but only some titles can be called cinematic horror games. These are the ones that either play like interactive movies where your choices matter or feel like you have stepped into a big-budget horror production directed with the flair of a Hollywood film. Both styles will raise your heartbeat, but in very different ways. Some lean toward branching narratives where you accidentally get your favorite character killed, while others rely on camera work, sound design, and intense action-packed storytelling to trap you in their nightmarish grip. Either way, they prove that horror gaming is as much about performance and presentation as it is about scares.

Let’s rank seven of the best cinematic horror games, a mix of interactive dramas and cinematic blockbusters, that show just how powerful horror can be when it borrows tricks from film.

Top 7 Cinematic Horror Games to Play in 2025

7. Alan Wake 2 (2023)

Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece of modern horror that shows how games can push storytelling to cinematic levels. Remedy Entertainment blends live action, surreal dream sequences, and traditional gameplay into a package that constantly blurs the line between film and interactive drama.

As far as cinematic horror games go, Alan Wake 2 stands among the top. Its use of sound, lighting, and dramatic transitions make every moment feel staged for maximum tension. Unlike games such as House of Ashes which is like a scary movie marathon; Alan Wake 2 feels more like an arthouse psychological horror film where the director makes sure you leave the theater deeply unsettled.

6. House of Ashes (2021)

Part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, House of Ashes is easily one of the most cinematic. You control multiple soldiers trapped in an ancient Mesopotamian temple after falling underground during the Iraq War. Now instead of just fighting human enemies, soldiers are left facing monsters hiding in the dark. Though early on, the game can feel boring and predictable, within 2-3 hours, everything changes.

What makes House of Ashes special among cinematic horror games is the way it blends military thriller with supernatural terror. Every camera angle feels like it was chosen by a director, and the pacing mirrors that of a war-horror film. Best of all, you can play it in multiplayer, making it one of those horror games on Steam that double as a party experience. With multiple endings, plenty of deaths, and some tense quick-time events, House of Ashes feels like you are trapped inside a movie marathon.

5. The Devil in Me (2022)

The Devil in Me takes players into a re-creation of H. H. Holmes’ infamous murder hotel. This game leans heavily into the interactive movie genre. You control a film crew exploring the creepy location for a documentary, and soon enough, they find themselves being stalked by an insane serial killer who enjoys setting traps.

It is cinematic in the purest sense: heavily scripted, packed with branching choices, and tense enough to make you question every move. Like House of Ashes, it is part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, and it feels like a love letter to slasher films. The Devil in Me may not have the large-scale spectacle of AAA titles, but it absolutely nails the feeling of stepping into a slasher film yourself, with the terrifying risk of losing all your characters in brutal fashion.

4. Until Dawn (2015, 2024)

When people mention cinematic horror games, Until Dawn is among those names that come first. Initially released in 2015, it was remade and re-released in 2024 for PC and the PS5. It is probably the first game that proved interactive drama could carry the tension of a slasher movie while letting the player shape the outcome. Eight teenagers stuck on a mountain resort, stalked by supernatural threats and a crazy killer hell-bent on revenge. Plus, they risk facing the outcome of their own bad decisions, making for an experience that is as campy as it is chilling.

The branching paths and butterfly effect keep it repayable, and its spin-off VR title The Inpatient makes the game part of the conversation around horror games in VR as well. Until Dawn remains one of the most beloved horror experiences of the decade, largely because it successfully delivered the fantasy of being inside a scary film where you are both audience and director.

3. The Quarry (2022)

The Quarry is essentially Supermassive Games’ bigger, shinier spiritual successor to Until Dawn. It offers a larger cast, a summer camp setting, and enough branching endings to keep horror fans busy for weeks, if not months. If you loved Until Dawn, then you are definitely going to love The Quarry as well.

It is one of those cinematic horror games that almost feels too close to an actual movie. The performances, lighting, and pacing are Hollywood quality. On PC, it is also one of the more accessible horror games on Steam, so you can dive into this interactive slasher whenever you want.

Read our full The Quarry Review here.. .

2. Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024)

The Silent Hill 2 remake is a reminder that horror can be both terrifying and heartbreaking. James Sunderland’s journey into the fog-covered town to search for his wife remains one of the most disturbing stories in gaming history. The remake modernized everything with a cinematic touch, while keeping the psychological horror intact. As one of the finest cinematic horror games, Silent Hill 2 is not about jump scares or gore. It is about atmosphere, symbolism, and emotional storytelling staged with the intensity of a psychological thriller.

For PC fans, Silent Hill 2 Remake is available as one of the top horror games on Steam, and it is a must-play if you want a horror game that feels more like a disturbing arthouse film than a simple monster hunt. Although considered a masterpiece among horror games, many players get a feeling of emptiness and depression while playing the game, so if you are expecting adrenaline fueled entertainment like the other titles on this list, this game might not be for you.

Read the latest updates about Silent Hill f, the next game in the Silent Hill franchise, coming out in less than a month!

1. Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023)

At the top sits Resident Evil 4. Even though the original was one of the best games for its time, the 2024 Resident Evil 4 remake stand as a legend, not just in survival horror, but in cinematic design. Every encounter feels choreographed, from the village siege to the gunfights in the castle. Ashley and Leon’s chemistry may lighten the mood and some occasional humor to the game, but make no mistake, this is one of the most intense cinematic horror games ever made.

The remake also gave us one of the best horror games in VR, letting players face chainsaw-wielding maniacs in first person. Few things will make your palms sweat more than seeing Ganados charge at you in virtual reality. If you are a PC gamer, Resident Evil 4 is among those games that should be in the library among horror games on Steam, as it set the standard for how to balance action with horror.
