Directive 8020 is Supermassive Games’ latest sci-fi horror experience, featuring cinematic storytelling, tense atmosphere, impressive visuals, and choice-driven gameplay. Read on to know if it is worth your time and money!

Directive 8020 is Supermassive Games’ latest sci-fi horror experience, featuring cinematic storytelling, tense atmosphere, impressive visuals, and choice-driven gameplay. Read on to know if it is worth your time and money!

Four years after The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me, Supermassive Games finally returns with Directive 8020, released on May 12, 2026. Expectations were naturally high. The Dark Pictures Anthology has always been known for its cinematic horror storytelling, branching choices, and multiple endings. Considering that the studio is known for titles like Until Dawn and The Quarry, Directive 8020 promised something bigger. This time, Supermassive stepped into full sci-fi horror territory with heavy inspirations from classic sci-fi horror stories.

The premise alone was enough to excite fans of cinematic horror games. Humanity is dying, a spaceship crew is sent toward a distant planet, and an alien creature slowly turns the crew against each other. On paper, it sounds like one of the strongest concepts Supermassive has ever created. And for a while, Directive 8020 genuinely feels like it could become one of the studio’s best narrative horror games.

Read on to know if the game is worth your time.

Visuals And Atmosphere Are Excellent

One thing Supermassive Games almost always delivers is presentation, and Directive 8020 is no exception. The game looks fantastic. Character models are detailed, lighting is impressive, and the spaceship environments create a constant feeling of unease. Unreal Engine 5 clearly helped the studio push visuals to another level, especially during close-up scenes and tense horror moments.

The atmosphere is where the game shines the most. The dark corridors, blinking lights, strange noises, and paranoia-driven storytelling create genuine tension during several parts of the game. I did not find the game extremely terrifying to be honest, but it absolutely succeeds at making players uncomfortable. Even if you are not a horror fan, you will likely be fine playing through it because the horror relies more on suspense and psychological tension rather than nonstop jump scares.

Among recent cinematic horror games, Directive 8020 easily stands out visually. Some creature designs are disturbing in the best possible way, especially when the game leans into body horror. Supermassive clearly understood the aesthetic they wanted to create.

The Characters Feel Underdeveloped?

Unfortunately, the characters are one of the weaker aspects of the experience. Directive 8020 introduces several crew members very quickly, but instead of slowly building attachment, the game mostly throws them into the story immediately. Because of this, it becomes difficult to remember who is who, at least during the first half of the game.

Few characters do become interesting later, and performances from actors like Lashana Lynch help carry some emotional scenes, but overall, the cast lacks the emotional impact seen in previous Supermassive titles like Until Dawn or The Quarry. Most players will probably only care deeply about one or two characters by the end. To put it shortly, it is not a game that will stay with you for years, or even months.

The Story Starts Strong But…

The biggest strength of Directive 8020 is also its biggest frustration. The story has enormous potential. The opening episodes build mystery extremely well, and the paranoia surrounding the alien threat keeps the tension high. The game constantly makes you question who can be trusted, which fits perfectly within the themes of classic sci-fi horror.

However, the deeper the story goes, the more it starts feeling like a long Black Mirror episode rather than a truly unforgettable space horror masterpiece. There is a specific twist later in the game that changes the tone dramatically. Without spoiling anything, many players will probably understand where the ending is heading long before the final episode arrives.

That predictability hurts the emotional impact. Instead of escalating tension, the story slowly becomes depressing and emotionally distant. By the seventh episode, some players may even lose interest in the mystery because the game reveals too much too early. This is disappointing because the foundation for something incredible was clearly there.

Still, credit must be given where it is deserved. Directive 8020 does attempt ideas that feel fresh for cinematic horror games. Even when the execution is uneven, the game at least tries to bring something different to the genre.

How good is the gameplay in Directive 8020?

If there is one criticism repeated across both player reactions and professional reviews, it is the gameplay. Directive 8020 introduces stealth mechanics for the first time in a major way, but unfortunately, they become repetitive very quickly.

Most gameplay sections follow almost the exact same structure. You sneak around while an enemy searches for you, you find a power cell, activate a door, avoid detection, and repeat the process again and again, again and again. At first, these moments feel tense, but eventually they become frustrating rather than scary.

The enemies also follow predictable patterns, which removes a lot of suspense. Instead of dynamic survival horror gameplay, many sections feel like routine stealth puzzles. Reviews online compared these segments unfavorably to games like Alien Isolation but criticized the game as the AI lacks unpredictability.

This repetition seriously damages pacing during the second half of the game. The story slows down, gameplay loops repeat themselves, and the tension begins disappearing. For a game built around fear and paranoia, losing tension is a major issue.

Choices, Replayability, And The New Features

Like previous Dark Pictures titles, Directive 8020 includes branching narratives, multiple endings, and character deaths. The new Turning Points system allows players to rewind important decisions, which makes the game more accessible for newcomers to this franchise.

Some players will love this feature because it reduces frustration. Others may feel it weakens the tension because choices no longer feel permanent. Horror games often become more intense when mistakes cannot be undone, so the rewind mechanic has been met with mixed reactions. Personally, I think it does reduce replay value, but it is a useful mechanic, as it gives players a choice if they would like to replay the game entirely or just go back to the last Turning Point.

Replayability is still decent anyway thanks to alternate paths and different outcomes, but the repetitive gameplay may discourage multiple playthroughs for some players. Even so, the multiplayer modes remain fun with friends, especially when people argue about choices and character survival.

Is Directive 8020 Worth Playing?

So, is Directive 8020 worth playing? The answer honestly depends on what you expect from it. If you are looking for a terrifying survival horror masterpiece, you may walk away disappointed. The stealth gameplay becomes repetitive, the pacing loses momentum, and the story never fully reaches the heights its premise promised.

However, if you enjoy cinematic horror games and narrative horror games focused on atmosphere, choices, and sci-fi paranoia, and if you liked the earlier titles made by the studio, Directive 8020 is still worth experiencing at least once. The visuals are excellent, the atmosphere is strong, and the core concept remains genuinely fascinating.

Is Directive 8020 worth playing for casual horror fans? Probably yes. Is Directive 8020 worth playing for people expecting the next Alien Isolation or Dead Space? Probably not. In the end, Directive 8020 feels like a good game which had the potential to become an amazing one. The game is ambitious, interesting, and memorable in parts, but also frustrating because you can clearly see how much greater it could have been.

Discover the top upcoming horror games in 2026 that horror fans are excited about…….

If you’ve been playing horror lately, you’ve probably noticed something. The genre has been on fire. Whether we talk about the eerie beauty of indie games like Little Nightmares or the immersive and creepy horror of games like Resident Evil 7, or whether we talk about remakes of psychological horror masterpieces like Silent Hill 2, or cinematic interactive movies like The Quarry, we’ve today entered a new golden age of fear. Game developers have finally learned that horror doesn’t always mean cheap jump scares; it’s about tension, atmosphere, psychological creepiness, and storytelling that crawls under your skin. And looking ahead, the trend only gets stronger.

2026 is shaping up to be an absolute feast for horror lovers. Here we have dug deep into official sources and hands-on previews to bring you the seven upcoming horror games in 2026 that deserve a spot on your radar. From cosmic nightmares to cursed dolls, each one promises to twist the genre in its own terrifying way. So grab your flashlight, take a deep breath, and let’s count down from #7 to #1.

#7. The Sinking City 2

Frogwares | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC | First half of 2026

The follow-up to Frogwares’ cult hit is swimming back into the shadows. The Sinking City 2 dives deeper into Lovecraftian madness, pulling players into a decaying coastal world where every whisper hints at something monstrous lurking beneath. This time, the focus leans more on survival elements such as scavenging for scarce supplies, managing sanity, and facing creatures that should not exist. If cosmic horror is your thing, this will be one of the horror games best suited to leave you sleepless.

#6. Welcome to Doll Town

Bad Wish Games | PC (consoles likely) | February 13, 2026

It’s hard to imagine anything creepier than a town full of dolls that move when you’re not looking. Welcome to Doll Town is an indie title that embraces that nightmare completely. As you explore the cursed village, you’ll uncover the disturbing legends behind its porcelain inhabitants. The developers promise psychological horror over action, with puzzles, exploration, and a thick sense of dread that feels straight out of a folk tale gone wrong. It’s a standout among horror games upcoming for its originality and slow-burn terror.

#5. Directive 8020

Supermassive Games | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC | First half of 2026

Supermassive is back to remind everyone why they rule cinematic horror. Directive 8020, part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, takes the tension into deep space. Imagine Until Dawn mixed with Alien: Isolation, with branching storylines, brutal consequences, and claustrophobic corridors where every decision can end in tragedy. Expect movie-quality visuals, emotional writing, and the kind of multiplayer tension that makes you scream at your friends for making the wrong choice.

#4. ILL

Team Clout | PC | Release TBA (expected 2026)

Few horror games have generated as much buzz from a single trailer as ILL. The Unreal Engine 5 showcase was so realistic that it looked like a live-action short. The developers promise grounded, disturbing body horror inspired by classics like The Thing. You’ll play in first-person, scavenging weapons and tools while dealing with grotesque transformations and environments that feel sickly alive. This is why ILL is one of the most anticipated upcoming horror games in 2026. If done right, ILL could easily become one of the horror games best remembered of this new generation.

#3. End of Abyss

Section 9 Interactive / Epic Games Publishing | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC | 2026

End of Abyss blends science fiction with pure terror. Set in an underground facility gone dark, it invites players to uncover what really happened in its depths. Expect dimly lit corridors, a minimal HUD, and an atmosphere that feels suffocating. Stealth, survival, and puzzle elements combine with moments of raw panic. It’s one of those horror games upcoming that looks both gorgeous and deeply uncomfortable, exactly what fans want. If you love indie experiences like Little Nightmares, you will love this one.

#2. Resident Evil Requiem

Capcom | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch 2 | February 27, 2026

The kings of survival horror are back. Resident Evil Requiem marks the next evolution in Capcom’s legendary and hugely popular Resident Evil franchise, continuing the mix of action and fear. The story remains under wraps, but early hints suggest a return to isolated locations and more traditional survival gameplay. With its release date already locked, this is easily one of the upcoming horror games in 2026 that fans can start counting down to right now.

#1. Reanimal

Tarsier Studios / THQ Nordic | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch 2 | Q1 2026

Yes, put this above Resident Evil Requiem, because of how creative and unique this game is, especially coming from an indie studio. From the original studio behind Little Nightmares, Reanimal looks hauntingly original. Set in a surreal world of decaying beauty, you and a partner navigate environments filled with twisted creatures and strange rituals. It combines puzzle-platforming with cooperative survival mechanics, wrapped in the same eerie tone that made Tarsier famous, due to the original Little Nightmares games. Every trailer so far screams artistry and unease in equal measure. For many fans, this might not just be the most creative of the upcoming horror games in 2026, it could be the one that defines the genre’s next chapter.

Update: Reanimal is released and available to play. Here is our Reanimal review.

Final Thoughts

The horror genre isn’t slowing down, it’s thriving. From psychological tension to cosmic dread, 2026 is stacked with experiences that prove fear can still evolve. Whether you are looking forward to the unsettling atmosphere of Reanimal, the creeping mystery of The Sinking City 2, or the pulse-pounding survival in Resident Evil Requiem, there’s something for every type of fan.

If you’ve been searching for the horror games best suited to test your nerves, make sure to keep your eye on these seven. The year ahead looks terrifying in the best possible way, and our list of upcoming horror games in 2026 only prove it!

Explore seven cinematic horror games that deliver intense storytelling, terrifying choices, and unforgettable movie-like experiences.

Horror comes in many flavors, but only some titles can be called cinematic horror games. These are the ones that either play like interactive movies where your choices matter or feel like you have stepped into a big-budget horror production directed with the flair of a Hollywood film. Both styles will raise your heartbeat, but in very different ways. Some lean toward branching narratives where you accidentally get your favorite character killed, while others rely on camera work, sound design, and intense action-packed storytelling to trap you in their nightmarish grip. Either way, they prove that horror gaming is as much about performance and presentation as it is about scares.

Let’s rank seven of the best cinematic horror games, a mix of interactive dramas and cinematic blockbusters, that show just how powerful horror can be when it borrows tricks from film.

Top 7 Cinematic Horror Games to Play in 2025

7. Alan Wake 2 (2023)

Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece of modern horror that shows how games can push storytelling to cinematic levels. Remedy Entertainment blends live action, surreal dream sequences, and traditional gameplay into a package that constantly blurs the line between film and interactive drama.

As far as cinematic horror games go, Alan Wake 2 stands among the top. Its use of sound, lighting, and dramatic transitions make every moment feel staged for maximum tension. Unlike games such as House of Ashes which is like a scary movie marathon; Alan Wake 2 feels more like an arthouse psychological horror film where the director makes sure you leave the theater deeply unsettled.

6. House of Ashes (2021)

Part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, House of Ashes is easily one of the most cinematic. You control multiple soldiers trapped in an ancient Mesopotamian temple after falling underground during the Iraq War. Now instead of just fighting human enemies, soldiers are left facing monsters hiding in the dark. Though early on, the game can feel boring and predictable, within 2-3 hours, everything changes.

What makes House of Ashes special among cinematic horror games is the way it blends military thriller with supernatural terror. Every camera angle feels like it was chosen by a director, and the pacing mirrors that of a war-horror film. Best of all, you can play it in multiplayer, making it one of those horror games on Steam that double as a party experience. With multiple endings, plenty of deaths, and some tense quick-time events, House of Ashes feels like you are trapped inside a movie marathon.

5. The Devil in Me (2022)

The Devil in Me takes players into a re-creation of H. H. Holmes’ infamous murder hotel. This game leans heavily into the interactive movie genre. You control a film crew exploring the creepy location for a documentary, and soon enough, they find themselves being stalked by an insane serial killer who enjoys setting traps.

It is cinematic in the purest sense: heavily scripted, packed with branching choices, and tense enough to make you question every move. Like House of Ashes, it is part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, and it feels like a love letter to slasher films. The Devil in Me may not have the large-scale spectacle of AAA titles, but it absolutely nails the feeling of stepping into a slasher film yourself, with the terrifying risk of losing all your characters in brutal fashion.

4. Until Dawn (2015, 2024)

When people mention cinematic horror games, Until Dawn is among those names that come first. Initially released in 2015, it was remade and re-released in 2024 for PC and the PS5. It is probably the first game that proved interactive drama could carry the tension of a slasher movie while letting the player shape the outcome. Eight teenagers stuck on a mountain resort, stalked by supernatural threats and a crazy killer hell-bent on revenge. Plus, they risk facing the outcome of their own bad decisions, making for an experience that is as campy as it is chilling.

The branching paths and butterfly effect keep it repayable, and its spin-off VR title The Inpatient makes the game part of the conversation around horror games in VR as well. Until Dawn remains one of the most beloved horror experiences of the decade, largely because it successfully delivered the fantasy of being inside a scary film where you are both audience and director.

3. The Quarry (2022)

The Quarry is essentially Supermassive Games’ bigger, shinier spiritual successor to Until Dawn. It offers a larger cast, a summer camp setting, and enough branching endings to keep horror fans busy for weeks, if not months. If you loved Until Dawn, then you are definitely going to love The Quarry as well.

It is one of those cinematic horror games that almost feels too close to an actual movie. The performances, lighting, and pacing are Hollywood quality. On PC, it is also one of the more accessible horror games on Steam, so you can dive into this interactive slasher whenever you want.

2. Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024)

The Silent Hill 2 remake is a reminder that horror can be both terrifying and heartbreaking. James Sunderland’s journey into the fog-covered town to search for his wife remains one of the most disturbing stories in gaming history. The remake modernized everything with a cinematic touch, while keeping the psychological horror intact. As one of the finest cinematic horror games, Silent Hill 2 is not about jump scares or gore. It is about atmosphere, symbolism, and emotional storytelling staged with the intensity of a psychological thriller.

For PC fans, Silent Hill 2 Remake is available as one of the top horror games on Steam, and it is a must-play if you want a horror game that feels more like a disturbing arthouse film than a simple monster hunt. Although considered a masterpiece among horror games, many players get a feeling of emptiness and depression while playing the game, so if you are expecting adrenaline fueled entertainment like the other titles on this list, this game might not be for you.

1. Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023)

At the top sits Resident Evil 4. Even though the original was one of the best games for its time, the 2024 Resident Evil 4 remake stand as a legend, not just in survival horror, but in cinematic design. Every encounter feels choreographed, from the village siege to the gunfights in the castle. Ashley and Leon’s chemistry may lighten the mood and some occasional humor to the game, but make no mistake, this is one of the most intense cinematic horror games ever made.

The remake also gave us one of the best horror games in VR, letting players face chainsaw-wielding maniacs in first person. Few things will make your palms sweat more than seeing Ganados charge at you in virtual reality. If you are a PC gamer, Resident Evil 4 is among those games that should be in the library among horror games on Steam, as it set the standard for how to balance action with horror.
